Looking Across the Lake
25 years of the City of Joondalup art collection

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT, ART DIRECTION, DESIGN, EDITING, COPYWRITING, PRINT PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

Looking Across the Lake is a publication celebrating 25 years of the City of Joondalup art collection, surveying key acquisitions through the Invitation Art Prize while exploring ideas of cultural identity, place and belonging. Combining newly commissioned essays, artist conversations and an expansive visual archive, the publication reflects on the collection’s history and its relationship to Western Australia’s evolving cultural landscape.

The design embraces an eclectic editorial language, layering contemporary photography with archival, found and manipulated imagery. Generous artwork reproductions are interwoven with historical references and graphic interventions, creating a richly textured reading experience that mirrors the diversity of the collection itself.

The publication comprises a section-sewn softcover book with a cloth-covered spine, housed within a hand-crafted cloth-bound clamshell box. A detached concertina-folded insert extends the publication beyond the book format, unfolding into a poster-like object that references the temporary architecture of the Invitation Art Prize exhibition and encourages new ways of engaging with the collection.
